Trump administration to investigate University of Minnesota for diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts

The University of Utah is one of five schools under investigation by the Trump administration for alleged antisemitism, as well as for partnering with the PhD Project in violation of Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The Department of Education has also accused the U of offering race-based scholarships, prompting Secretary of Education Linda McMahon to assert that students should be judged on merit, not skin color.

In response, a U spokesperson has stated that the university will fully cooperate with the investigation and is committed to creating an inclusive and discrimination-free environment. The spokesperson emphasized that the university regularly reviews its selection criteria for grants, scholarships, and awards to ensure compliance with all laws.

The latest scrutiny from the Department of Education comes after a memo instructing institutions to end the use of racial preferences and stereotypes in admissions and programming or risk losing federal funding. These investigations highlight the ongoing debate over affirmative action in higher education and the need for universities to ensure fair practices in student selection and support programs.

As the U continues to navigate these investigations, it remains focused on fostering a diverse and welcoming campus environment while adhering to federal law and standards of fairness in education.
