A proposal to resurrect the retired Minnesota state flag was introduced by 22 House Republicans at the State Capitol Thursday. The bill would allow the “historic state flag” to be flown at the Capitol, on state properties, on official state holidays, and during the legislative session. The bill specifies that the historic state flag should be displayed beneath the official flag when both are present.
Last year, the legislature adopted a new state flag and seal after months of debate and retired the old ones due to controversy over offensive imagery. The old flag featured a Native American and a white settler, while the new design is a dark blue Minnesota-style shape with a white star and a state seal featuring a loon amid wild rice.
The State Emblems Redesign Commission received over 2,600 proposals from the public before approving the final design modifications, which officially became official on May 11, 2024. If the “historic state flag” bill is approved, it would become official on May 11, 2026. The proposal was introduced at the House State Government Finance and Policy Committee.
