Severe Storms Claim Lives and Leave Thousands Without Power in Upper Midwest
A devastating storm system swept through the upper Midwest from Friday into Saturday, resulting in three fatalities in Enderlin, North Dakota, as powerful winds prompted tornadic activity. Cass County Sheriff Jesse Jahner confirmed the deaths of two men and a woman at separate locations in the town, which is located about 57 miles southwest of Fargo. National Weather Service meteorologist Timothy Lynch stated ongoing investigations are assessing the tornado’s strength and impact, which also left approximately 20,000 customers without power in North Dakota.
In Minnesota, significant destruction occurred in Beltrami County, where wind gusts reached up to 106 mph. Emergency managers reported extensive damage, including downed trees, flash flooding, and building destruction in downtown Bemidji. Mayor Jorge Prince described the unnerving winds, with roofs ripped off buildings and numerous vehicles flipped.
Power outages affected over 17,000 customers in northern Minnesota and about 23,000 in Wisconsin. As of late Saturday afternoon, residents were warned to prepare for extended power outages. Meanwhile, extreme heat warnings were issued for nearly 150 million Americans across the Midwest and Northern Plains this weekend. Cleanup efforts are now underway as communities assess the damage from this severe weather event.
