Minnesota Lawmaker and Wife Targeted in Shooting; Colleague Murdered

In a shocking incident, Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot a combined 17 times at their home after a masked gunman, Vance Boelter, posed as a police officer to gain entry early Saturday morning. The couple had just returned from a Democratic fundraising dinner when they were awakened by loud knocking around 2 a.m.

Upon opening the door, the Hoffmans were confronted at gunpoint. John lunged at Boelter, sustaining nine gunshot wounds, while Yvette was hit eight times as she attempted to push the assailant away. Their daughter, Hope, quickly locked the door and called 911. Boelter fled the scene, later murdering Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband at their home.

John Hoffman now remains in critical but stable condition, with Yvette in stable condition after surgeries. The shootings have been labeled as “targeted political violence,” with authorities revealing Boelter had a hit list of 70 names, primarily targeting Democrats and abortion rights supporters. The incident has sparked outrage and calls for a return to civility in public discourse. Boelter is in custody facing multiple charges, including murder.
