Anoka’s Maddy Freking Named All-Minnesota Player of the Year in Girls Flag Football

Anoka’s Freking Embraces New Challenge as Quarterback

Anoka’s own Freking is making waves on the field as she takes on the role of quarterback in a 5-on-5 flag football league. With a background in softball and basketball, this tall athlete is no stranger to competitive sports. Freking’s journey into football was inspired by her older brother Evan, who excelled as a quarterback at Anoka.

When approached by her coach Delamarter to join the team, Freking jumped at the opportunity, confidently stating, “I’m in,” despite the need to consult her softball coach. “I didn’t know what to expect coming in,” Freking admitted, as she realized the transition to football came with its own unique set of rules and strategies.

Her previous experiences in sports haven’t dulled her eagerness to learn. “I knew I’d take the new sport seriously, like any of my others,” Freking said. Delamarter noted her remarkable leadership skills, asserting that her commitment would inspire the rest of the team to adopt a similar seriousness.

As the team gears up for the state tournament, they face a critical challenge. On June 1, Anoka found themselves in a tight match against the formidable 8-1 Melrose. The teams battled fiercely, finishing with a 14-14 tie, highlighting the stakes involved as they push for a coveted spot in the tournament. Freking’s dedication and leadership could prove instrumental in steering Anoka towards success as they navigate the heat of competition in the weeks ahead.
