Vance Boelter, 57, is accused of fatally shooting Minnesota state lawmaker John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, while also wounding another couple, after stalking his victims. Prosecutors described Boelter as having been “elaborately disguised” as a police officer, donning a hyper-realistic silicone mask and tactical gear when he arrived at the Hoffmans’ home at around 2 a.m. on a Saturday morning. He allegedly knocked on their door, claiming to be law enforcement, and attempted to gain entry before revealing his true intentions, resulting in the couple being shot multiple times in a violent struggle.
In the aftermath, the Hoffmans’ daughter called 911, and they were hospitalized. Boelter had reportedly planned his attack for some time, with authorities discovering over 45 names of elected officials in notes from his vehicle, indicating he conducted extensive research on his targets.
Following the Hoffmans, Boelter aimed to attack additional Minnesota politicians, moving to the home of Democratic state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. At 3:30 a.m., as police were conducting wellness checks on various officials, Boelter forced his way into the Hortman residence, fatally shooting them both before fleeing. He discarded parts of his disguise during his escape.
After a large manhunt, police found Boelter hiding in a field. He allegedly communicated ominously with his family during and after the events, expressing regret and warning about police. Now facing charges of murder and stalking, Boelter could face life imprisonment or the death penalty. He appeared in court, requesting legal representation due to financial constraints. A hearing has been scheduled for June 27.
