Senate Democrats’ Campaign Leader Declares ‘All States in Play’ in Battle for Majority

Democrats must target red states to regain control of the Senate, and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand believes President Trump’s policies, especially cuts to Medicaid, have opened opportunities for them. In an interview, Gillibrand emphasized that every state is a potential target due to a growing backlash against Trump’s decisions. The party aims to net four seats, focusing on vulnerable GOP incumbents like Susan Collins in Maine and Thom Tillis in North Carolina. Candidates such as former Rep. Wiley Nickel and staffer Jordan Wood have begun their campaigns, while other potential candidates like Maine Gov. Janet Mills and former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper are being considered. However, Mills has expressed reluctance to run.

Gillibrand noted that many potential candidates are changing their minds due to public reaction against Trump’s policies, particularly those that undermine social safety nets. Democrats need to flip seats in traditionally Republican states—like Texas, Iowa, and South Carolina—to achieve a majority. Currently, they hold no Senate seats in the 24 states Trump won in his elections.

The “magic formula” for Democratic success includes a strong backlash against Trump combined with strong, relatable candidates and support from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC). Primaries in competitive states like Iowa are already forming, targeting key issues of affordability and public safety. Gillibrand links GOP remarks—like those of Sen. Joni Ernst, who faced backlash for dismissing risky Medicaid cuts—as potential advantages for Democrats.

Gillibrand remains optimistic about Democratic candidates, particularly Sen. Jon Ossoff in Georgia, and believes they can overcome GOP attacks, including challenges over social issues. Overall, Democrats are gearing up for a strategic campaign based on public concerns and strong local candidates.
