Toni Gillen: Championing Hockey for All
Toni Gillen has dedicated nearly two decades to promoting hockey’s inclusivity through her role as the Minnesota Diversified Hockey director for USA Hockey. Overseeing five disciplines—special and sled hockey, Warrior Hockey for veterans, blind hockey, and deaf/hard of hearing hockey—Gillen is passionate about breaking barriers in the sport. "They have such drive and tenacity," she says, emphasizing the incredible spirit of the athletes she supports.
Her commitment to the sport did not go unnoticed; her colleagues at the Minnesota Wild nominated her for the prestigious Willie O’Ree Community Hero Award, recognizing individuals who impact their communities through hockey. Among 500 nominees, Gillen made the top three, reflecting 18 years of dedication and achievement in helping others realize their dreams.
Gillen also works full-time as a night nurse at Gillette Children’s Hospital, showcasing her tireless work ethic. "It’s the families and their desire to be part of something that keeps me going," she explains.
The winner of the award will receive $25,000 to donate to a charity, which Gillen plans to allocate to Minnesota Diversified Hockey for essential resources. The award will be announced later in June.
