Layoff Notices Issued to Minnesota State Workers Amid Ongoing Budget Dispute

Minnesota Workers Face Potential Layoffs Amid Budget Stalemate

St. Paul, MN — As Minnesota lawmakers remain at an impasse over the state’s two-year budget, state agencies are starting to alert workers about possible layoffs in the coming weeks. The legislative session adjourned three weeks ago without a budget agreement, prompting concerns that a partial state government shutdown could occur on July 1 if a budget is not passed by month’s end.

House Democratic Leader Melissa Hortman expressed urgency for action, stating, "We want Wednesday," indicating the need for non-partisan staff to expedite bill drafting. House Speaker Lisa Demuth echoed this sentiment, agreeing that a target date for progress is necessary. If an agreement is not reached by June 9, layoff notices will be sent to the rest of the state workforce, following warnings already issued to nurses.

Governor Tim Walz emphasized the uncertainty surrounding the situation, noting, “There’s so much uncertainty right now, we don’t want to add any more to that.” Legally, the state is obligated to provide advance warning of potential layoffs to union-represented employees, necessitating proactive communication during this budget gridlock.

Despite the looming deadline, Hortman remained optimistic, expressing “very confidence that there will be a budget in place very soon.” As both parties strive to find common ground, the immediate future of Minnesota’s workforce hangs in the balance. The pressure is mounting for lawmakers to act swiftly to avoid significant disruptions to state services and employment.
