Bob Purcell Retires After Impactful Tenure at Minnesota West Community & Technical College
WORTHINGTON — After eight years as the athletic director at Minnesota West Community & Technical College and a remarkable 20-year tenure as head wrestling coach, Bob Purcell is retiring, marking the end of an era for the institution. Purcell stepped into the athletic director role in 2017 after serving briefly in an interim capacity, bringing with him a wealth of experience from his years coaching wrestling.
Reflecting on his decision to retire, Purcell stated, "My daughters are in college now, and I wanted to spend more time with my family." He emphasized the value of life outside of work, noting the importance of family and the need to prioritize time together.
Under Purcell’s leadership, the men’s athletic department saw improvements in academic performance and budget management. He successfully implemented initiatives to hire local coaches who not only excelled in their roles but also valued academics. Purcell led the college’s wrestling program to significant achievements, including a graduation rate of 90.8%, 22 NJCAA All-Americans, and earning the NJCAA Man of the Year award in 2014.
Originally from Carrington, North Dakota, Purcell began his journey in athletics as a state-champion wrestler. His coaching career at Minnesota West began in 1997 when he seized an unexpected opportunity, eventually transforming the wrestling program.
Purcell expressed gratitude for the mentors and colleagues who influenced his career, and he looks forward to new adventures in retirement, including a trip to the Baltics. Despite stepping away from his professional role, he remains committed to supporting the Bluejays, stating, "I have been a Minnesota West Bluejay for 28 years, and I’m going to be a Minnesota West Bluejay."
