University of Guam Press Launches Georgiana Quintanilla Tyquiengco’s Debut Short Story Collection
The University of Guam Press is set to launch "Always Never Knowing," a debut collection of short stories by Georgiana Quintanilla Tyquiengco, on June 14 from 10 a.m. to noon at Dusit Place in Tumon. Aimed at filling a notable gap in local literature for young adults and teenagers, the event is open to the public and will feature an author reading, book signing, and interactive displays.
Tyquiengco’s collection centers around Jiavonna “Vonna” Cepeda, a teenager in southern Guam, navigating universal adolescent experiences through a Pacific Islander perspective. In an interview with The Guam Daily Post, Tyquiengco emphasized the lack of representation for young adults in local literature, saying, “there’s just a noticeable gap between what’s available for the public.”
Motivated by feedback during a pandemic writing workshop, Tyquiengco sought to channel a teen voice, capturing the essence of growing up amidst the cultural diversity of Guam. The stories mix humor and heavier themes, addressing topics like bicultural identity and the search for belonging, reflecting the rich experiences of Pacific Islander youth.
Publicist Justine De Fant highlights that the collection serves as a mirror for young readers in Guam, featuring familiar landmarks and local imagery. Award-winning author Kristiana Kahakauwila praised the unique narrative structure of the stories, which combine various formats to enhance engagement.
Early readers have expressed nostalgia and a desire for such representation during their formative years. Tyquiengco hopes her work inspires other local writers, stating that her experience reflects just one narrative in the diverse tapestry of Guam’s youth.
"Always Never Knowing" is available for pre-order at uogpress.com and will retail in local bookstores post-launch. For more details, contact Via De Fant at (671) 735-2153.
