First Round of Layoff Notices Sent to Nurses in Minnesota State Agencies

Nurses Among First to Receive Layoff Notices Amid Budget Negotiations

SAINT PAUL, Minn. — As Minnesota lawmakers grapple with finalizing the state budget, nurses in state agencies have become the first group to receive layoff notices amid an impending government shutdown scheduled for July 1. The Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA) confirmed that members employed by agencies including the Departments of Health and Corrections were notified of potential layoffs, signaling a wave of such notices expected to reach other state workers soon.

"This development comes during a turbulent time for public employees, exacerbated by recent federal public health funding cuts and a mandatory return-to-office policy," stated a spokesperson for the MNA.

Megan Dayton, president of the Minnesota Association of Professional Employees (MAPE), representing over 18,000 workers, mentioned that layoff notices for her members could follow shortly. According to their contract, the state must provide 21 days’ notice before layoffs take effect, leading to heightened anxiety among workers facing uncertain job security.

On the legislative front, Governor Tim Walz expressed optimism about convening a special session next week to finalize budget bills, aiming to reassure state employees about their employment status. "We are focused on crafting a fiscally responsible budget that addresses the needs of Minnesotans," he said.

DFL House Leader Melissa Hortman reassured workers, stating, "We are confident that there will be a budget in place soon, alleviating concerns surrounding the shutdown." With further negotiations slated, lawmakers are actively working on bills related to Transportation and Education, while discussions on Tax and Energy bills are ongoing.

As the deadline approaches, lawmakers emphasize the urgency of establishing a budget to mitigate the stress and uncertainty faced by state employees.
