A passenger train derailed in western Russia late Saturday, resulting in at least seven fatalities and injuring 30 others following the collapse of a bridge described by local officials as the result of “illegal interference.” The incident occurred in the Bryansk region, which borders Ukraine. According to Moscow Railways, the bridge, which had been damaged during transport operations, fell onto the tracks as the train was approaching.
Government pictures from the scene revealed severed train cars scattered among debris from the collapsed bridge. Additionally, social media footage showed vehicles narrowly avoiding disaster by stopping before the bridge crumbled. Bryansk regional Governor Alexander Bogomaz confirmed the fatalities, which included two children, and noted that emergency services were actively working to assist the victims.
While Russian authorities have not assigned blame for the incident, past accusations from officials have pointed towards pro-Ukrainian saboteurs targeting Russia’s railway infrastructure. In December 2023, Ukrainian media reported that Kyiv’s intelligence agency had successfully orchestrated two explosions on a significant railroad line in Siberia, crucial for trade between Russia and China. Although Russian Railways acknowledged one explosion, they provided no clarity on its cause and did not address the second reported incident.
As investigations continue, the situation remains tense, with limited independent verification of the surrounding details, contributing to the heightened scrutiny of railway safety and possible sabotage in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
