Eden Prairie Chamber Hosts Minnesota Chamber CEO Doug Loon for Legislative Update
At a recent Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce event, President Pat MulQueeny introduced Doug Loon, CEO of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, who discussed the ongoing legislative process in Minnesota. Although the legislature adjourned on May 19, several crucial spending bills remain unpassed, prompting expectations for a special session. Loon emphasized the importance of public engagement, urging attendees to contact their legislators regarding pressing issues.
The presentation also highlighted economic concerns stemming from new mandates, including the Earned Sick and Safe Time law and an upcoming Paid Leave law, both of which have raised alarms among small businesses due to their financial and operational implications. Loon pointed out the legislative push for changes to align Minnesota’s Paid Leave program more closely with federal standards and to accommodate small businesses.
Addressing workforce challenges, Loon illustrated the state’s high labor participation rate, while warning of impending demographic declines. He advocated for expedited environmental permitting processes to foster business growth. With nearly all legislative priorities for 2025 still pending, Loon acknowledged the necessity for bipartisan cooperation to navigate the evolving legislative landscape effectively.
