Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Cucumbers Spreads to 18 States, Sickening 45 People

A salmonella outbreak linked to a cucumber producer in Florida has affected 45 individuals in 18 states, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Retailers, including Target and Walmart, have recalled cucumbers and ready-to-eat products made with them, urging customers to dispose of these items. The recalled products include Boar’s Head Greek-style chicken salad and various sushi rolls sold under the Mai brand.

The outbreak has resulted in 16 hospitalizations, but no fatalities have been reported. Most illnesses have been traced back to cucumbers produced by Bedner Growers and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales, specifically between April 29 and May 19. Investigations have focused on the strain salmonella montevideo, though multiple unrelated strains were also discovered in samples from one of Bedner’s distribution centers.

The FDA indicated that both it and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are actively investigating further to determine if additional illnesses correspond to the newly detected strains. Initial concerns arose during an inspection of Bedner’s facilities, which revealed contaminated cucumbers. This was a follow-up to a previous salmonella outbreak tied to the same producer.

Salmonella can contaminate produce through contact with animals or their droppings, posing risks, especially to vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, and immunocompromised individuals. Symptoms of a salmonella infection, which can appear within six hours to six days, include stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. The CDC highlights salmonella as a leading cause of foodborne illness and related complications in the U.S. and globally.
