Interstate 494 Construction Causes Weekend Disruptions for Drivers
Minnesotans are once again facing the inconvenience of road construction as Interstate 494 undergoes significant upgrades. Starting Friday night, both directions of the highway between Highways 100 and 77 near Richfield will be closed until Monday morning. With over 100,000 daily drivers utilizing this route, frustration is mounting. Minneapolis resident Lindsey Fine expressed her displeasure, stating that navigating detours is increasingly challenging.
According to Kent Barnard from the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the construction aims to enhance road surfaces, improve traffic flow, and replace aging bridges. "These are major roads that we need to use to get to where we are going," Fine commented, highlighting the critical nature of I-494. Detours are in place: westbound drivers can take northbound Highway 77 to westbound Highway 62, while eastbound travelers can access northbound Highway 100 to eastbound Highway 62.
Bloomington resident Nicholas Severson lamented the added congestion. Travelers should note that this closure will also impact airport access. The construction is expected to significantly improve travel conditions once Interstate 494 reopens on Monday at 5 a.m.
