DHS Immigration ‘Sanctuary’ List Confuses Rural County Officials

Press Article: DHS Includes Minnesota Counties on Immigration List

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has drawn attention by including Minnesota, particularly its rural and predominantly Republican-leaning counties such as Lyon and Nobles, on a controversial list regarding compliance with federal immigration regulations. These counties are significant due to their large immigrant populations, particularly in the pork and turkey packing industries.

Lyon County Sheriff Eric Wallen expressed his confusion regarding the designation. In an interview, he stated, “As far as I know, we’re doing everything that the law allows us to do,” highlighting that he found no reason for the county’s inclusion on the list. On Friday, Sheriff Wallen attempted to reach Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for clarification but was left waiting on hold and ultimately hung up without getting any answers.

The DHS clarified their reasoning through a statement to the Minnesota Star Tribune, asserting that the list was generated based on various criteria. These factors included self-identification as a sanctuary entity, perceived “noncompliance” with federal law enforcement, restrictions on information-sharing, and legal protections for undocumented individuals.

The decision has sparked concern among local officials and residents, particularly those who rely on immigrant labor for essential agricultural operations. As the discussion around immigration policy continues to evolve, the impact of such listings on local communities remains a focal point of debate in Minnesota and beyond.
