Walz Seeks Immediate Budget Deals, but Layoff Notifications Are Coming

State Employees Face Layoff Notices Amid Budget Stalemate

With Minnesota’s $67 billion budget still unsigned, state labor union contracts mandate notifications for possible layoffs by June 1. Governor Tim Walz expressed optimism for resolving the deadlock but acknowledged the impending deadline. "We’re running up against that June 1 deadline, reassuring employees we’re going to get this budget done," he stated during a groundbreaking event for a new interchange near Jordan.

Despite the urgency, Walz acknowledged the improbability of a special session to finalize the budget ahead of June 1. He remains hopeful a budget will be in place by June 30, the deadline to avert a government shutdown. “I really do believe we’ll have everything by tonight,” he commented, though he noted the tax bill may face further delays.

The tax working group has endured recent conflicts, debating issues ranging from tax exemptions on Ryder Cup tickets to broader budgetary concerns. Rep. Aisha Gomez criticized the necessity of such exemptions, while Rep. Greg Davids touted their potential to generate significant revenue and exposure for Minnesota.

Bart Andersen, executive director of AFSCME Council 5, voiced concerns over the looming layoff notices. “It’s definitely concerning. Our members show up for work every day…and they, as well as us, expect the same out of the Legislature,” he remarked. Andersen urged lawmakers to take swift action to ensure stability for state employees.

The Minnesota Association of Professional Employees (MAPE) echoed these sentiments, warning that layoff notices, even if conditional, would disrupt lives and undermine public services. MAPE President Megan Dayton criticized the political gridlock, urging leaders to prioritize the stability of the state over partisan interests.

As lawmakers scramble to finalize the budget, state employees and their families brace for uncertainty that could impact essential public services statewide.
