Celebrities Participate in Early Voting for Korea’s Presidential Election
As early voting for Korea’s 21st presidential election took place on Thursday and Friday, a wave of celebrities made their voices heard by sharing their voting experiences on social media. Notable figures including BTS’s J-Hope, actress Han Ye-ri, and comedian Cho Sae-ho showcased their civic duty through creative posts, emphasizing the importance of voter participation.
J-Hope shared a striking photo of himself dressed all in black, standing near a voting station in Oksu-dong, Seongdong District, Seoul. Similarly, Han Ye-ri opted for a black-and-white selfie, capturing a moment of civic engagement. Other prominent personalities like Kim Go-eun, singers Yoon Jong-shin, and Lee Chae-yeon joined in, posting images that affirmed their participation while adhering to the "no color, no gesture" rule, a guideline discouraging any overt political display during election seasons in Korea.
Comedian Cho Sae-ho contributed a more subdued post, wearing a mask that obscured his face, while Lee Chae-yeon cleverly neutralized her blue wrist brace with a plastic container of red cherry tomatoes, humorously embracing the pressures of the unspoken rule.
Amid such creative approaches, singer Lee Seung-hwan took a bolder stance by donning blue attire, a nod to his prior public support for former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment. His unapologetic display of colors highlighted the varying levels of confidence among celebrities when it comes to expressing political views.
The early voting concluded with a turnout of 34.74%, reflecting a significant engagement from the public. The active involvement of celebrities in promoting voting through their platforms underscores the crucial role of civic participation in shaping Korea’s democratic landscape.
