Wildfires Continue to Rage in Northern Minnesota; Political Leaders to Assess Damage on Friday

Press Release: Wildfires Continue to Rage in Northern Minnesota Amid State Leaders’ Visit

Northern Minnesota – As wildfires persist in the region, political leaders are converging to assess the damage. The Jenkins Creek fire, part of the Brimson Complex, has expanded to over 15,500 acres, while two other fires—Camp House and Munger Shaw—burn on. Although containment efforts are ongoing, some positive news emerged early Friday: evacuation orders for the Munger Shaw fire have been lifted.

St. Louis County Sheriff Gordon Ramsey reported hot spots at the Camp House fire, noting that wind has reignited some areas. While Incident Command will review evacuation orders related to the Camp House fire, the Munger Shaw fire is currently 25% contained. State leaders, including Governor Tim Walz, Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, and Congressman Pete Stauber, are scheduled to tour the impacted areas.

Governor Walz addressed the media earlier, expressing gratitude to first responders and emphasizing the state’s commitment to recovery efforts. “This is going to be a fight over the coming days and potentially weeks,” he stated, assuring the community of support from both state and federal resources. He highlighted the critical bipartisan legislation that established a disaster contingency fund to assist with recovery.

Weather conditions, particularly strong winds, have complicated firefighting efforts; however, recent thunderstorms brought some rainfall, raising hopes for fire containment. Brian Jenkins, incident commander, expressed optimism about the potential relief from the overnight rain. Firefighters from across the United States have been on the frontlines battling the flames all week.

State officials remain focused on fighting the fires, with ongoing updates expected as conditions evolve.
