A suspect arrested for stealing Secretary Kristi Noem’s purse is in the U.S. illegally, according to Ed Martin, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. A second suspect, also undocumented, is still being sought. Martin emphasized that the theft was not specifically targeted at Noem due to her position as Secretary of Homeland Security; instead, it appeared to be a crime of opportunity. During a recorded interview, Martin stated that the purse was simply attractive, describing the thief as skilled and experienced in executing the theft.
The investigation has drawn the involvement of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). President Trump’s directive mandates that individuals in the U.S. illegally are prosecuted and potentially deported. Martin assured the public that the arrested individual would not be returning to the streets of America.
The theft occurred at Capital Burger in Washington, D.C., where a masked man approached Noem while she was dining with her family. He evaded two plainclothes Secret Service agents and dragged the purse, which contained $3,000 in cash, her Department of Homeland Security access badge, passport, credit cards, checks, keys, and driver’s license, toward himself before swiftly exiting the venue.
While the Metropolitan Police and the Secret Service are conducting an investigation, Noem, when asked for comments during the White House Easter Egg Roll, refrained from discussing the incident, indicating it was still unresolved. The Secret Service has also chosen not to comment further on the security situation surrounding Noem.
