Shedeur Sanders Drafted by Cleveland Browns in Fifth Round of NFL Draft

The Cleveland Browns selected Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders with the 144th pick in the fifth round of the NFL Draft, marking a surprising drop for a player many viewed as a potential first-round pick. Despite projections placing him as high as No. 3 to the New York Giants or No. 21 to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Sanders went undrafted over the first two nights, with five quarterbacks selected before him, including Miami’s Cam Ward and Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart.

Upon being drafted, Sanders expressed gratitude in a post on X, stating, “Thank you GOD.” The Browns shared a highlight reel of Sanders, promoting him as “another playmaker in the mix.” Leading up to the draft, he was ranked as the best available prospect by NBC Sports, with Connor Rogers placing him 30th on his board.

Sanders, the son of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, began his college career at Jackson State in 2021 under his father. Following their move to Colorado after the 2022 season, Sanders spent his last two years there, achieving significant success. In his senior year, he was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, completing 74% of his passes for 4,134 yards, 37 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. His leadership contributed to Colorado’s turnaround, transforming a one-win team the previous year to a nine-win squad in 2024, marking the school’s best performance since 2016. Despite his on-field prowess, concerns regarding his character off the field were raised leading up to the draft.
