The European Rail Supply Industry Association (UNIFE) is pushing for a €3 billion investment in a dedicated Rail Research Programme in the upcoming EU Budget to support the European rail supply industry. This investment aims to maintain the industry’s technological leadership, improve travel and freight movement across Europe, and address global competition challenges. The focus will be on developing advanced technologies such as FRMCS, DAC, ATO, and ERTMS to enhance passenger and freight services, increase network reliability, and facilitate cross-border travel. Additionally, the shift from road to rail for freight transport is expected to be supported by these advancements. The investment aligns with Europe’s climate neutrality objectives and aims to strengthen European rail capabilities. UNIFE plans to propose a pre-deployment strategy for integrating these advanced technologies into more EU rail networks. These technologies are essential for future High-Speed Rail projects, achieving the Single European Railway Area (SERA), completing the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transport. The International Union of Railways is already working on testing the FRMCS technology under real-world conditions, with UNIFE being part of the project consortium. This investment is crucial for the future of the European rail industry and the economy as a whole.
