The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that the number of people diagnosed with diabetes has more than doubled in the last two decades, with approximately 3 million adults in the U.S. affected by the disease. Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90-95% of all cases and common risk factors include obesity, family history, and age. Neurosurgeon Dr. Hariom Yadav emphasizes that aging is a significant risk factor for chronic diseases.

In addition to genetics and lifestyle factors, dietary habits play a crucial role in the development of Type 2 diabetes. Sugary drinks, processed foods, and eating habits such as consuming a large portion of daily calories after 5 p.m. have been linked to lower glucose tolerance, negatively impacting metabolism and BMI over time. Skipping breakfast and poor sleep are also strongly associated with an increased risk of diabetes.

According to Yadav, the gut has a significant impact on overall body physiology, highlighting the importance of maintaining healthy eating habits and regular sleep patterns to control hormones and glucose metabolism. The research presented in the Nutrition and Diabetes journal underscores the importance of recognizing the role that diet, timing of meals, and quality of sleep play in the prevention and management of Type 2 diabetes.
