Hundreds of protestors gathered in North Dakota and Minnesota on April 5 for the “Hands Off!” protests against the Trump administration. With over 1,200 protests planned nationwide, citizens rallied against President Trump and Elon Musk’s actions, particularly cuts to Social Security, health care funding, and federal worker firings. Demonstrations in Alexandria, Detroit Lakes, Duluth, and other cities drew large crowds, with Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison addressing the crowd in Duluth.
In Detroit Lakes, a rally at the Manna Food Co-op site criticized various federal funding cuts and tariffs. Protests in Bemidji, Jamestown, and across the Northland also saw significant turnout. In Grand Forks, over 400 people from both sides of the river gathered at the Sorlie Memorial Bridge to protest Trump and Musk’s policies. Similar events took place in Bismarck, Chisholm, Cloquet, Ely, Grand Marais, and Grand Rapids.
In Rochester, St. Cloud, and Jamestown, protestors spoke out against cuts to Medicaid and support for veterans, LGBTQ+ individuals, and other marginalized groups. Organizers emphasized the need to build an opposition movement against the Trump administration’s policies. The protests, attended by thousands, aimed to send a message of resistance and solidarity against what many perceive as a threat to fundamental American principles. Participants expressed a sense of hope and unity by standing together in the face of what they see as a critical moment in the country’s history.
