Maui physician accused of trying to kill his wife

Dr. Gerhardt Konig, a 46-year-old anesthesiologist, has been charged with second-degree attempted murder for allegedly pushing his wife off a hiking trail and hitting her with a rock in Honolulu. He is being held on a $5 million bond and it is unclear if he has entered a plea or retained a lawyer. Police say Konig fled the scene but was arrested eight hours later, after a brief foot pursuit. His wife, a project manager at TerraPower, was hospitalized in critical condition. Konig still holds his medical license in Hawaii and works as a partner at an anesthesia medical group in Maui. Prior to that, he was a professor at the University of Pittsburgh. The University of Pittsburgh and Konig’s employer did not respond to requests for comment. Konig and his wife got engaged in 2017 and married in 2018, according to his Facebook profile.
