Alexander Ovechkin equals Wayne Gretzky’s record for most goals in NHL history

Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin tied NHL legend Wayne Gretzky’s record for most career goals with his 894th goal on Friday against the Chicago Blackhawks. Ovechkin, the No. 1 overall pick in 2004, has lived up to his promise as an offensive force, holding several scoring records including most power-play goals and most goals for a single team. He has won nine Maurice “Rocket” Richard trophies and three NHL MVP awards, leading the Capitals to a Stanley Cup win in 2018. Although the team has not advanced past the first round of the playoffs since then, they are currently leading the Eastern Conference this season. Ovechkin, 39, has been playing professionally since 2001 and his contract with the Capitals runs through the 2025-26 season.
