PM Han Duck-soo’s impeachment struck down by South Korea’s Constitutional Court

The Constitutional Court of South Korea has ruled to strike down the impeachment of Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and restore his powers after he was impeached as acting president more than two months ago. Han took over from President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was impeached over his declaration of martial law. Han clashed with the opposition-led parliament by refusing to appoint more justices to the Constitutional Court, leading to his impeachment. The court ruled seven to one in favor of striking down the impeachment. Han, a 75-year-old veteran leader, had served under five presidents from both conservative and liberal parties. He was accused of not doing enough to prevent Yoon’s martial law declaration, an accusation he denied. Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok became acting president while the cases of Yoon and Han were considered. Parliament impeached Han over his alleged role in the martial law incident and his refusal to appoint more justices to the court. The unexpected imposition of martial law by Yoon in December caused political upheaval and concern among allies like the United States. The martial law lasted only six hours after lawmakers rejected the declaration. Han denied any involvement in the martial law and called for the court to dismiss the impeachment.
