As the U.S. government approaches a possible shutdown, here’s how it could impact Minnesotans.

Republicans in the U.S. House have put forward a budget proposal to prevent a government shutdown, but Democrats are opposed due to sharp budget cuts. The proposal, supported by President Trump, would give him more power in spending decisions. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer will vote to keep the government open, but it remains uncertain if there are enough Democratic votes to pass the measure.

Local Congresswoman Angie Craig voted against the proposal, citing cuts to funding for veterans and seniors. If the government shuts down, nonessential federal employees would face unpaid furloughs, while essential workers like air traffic controllers and the military would continue working without pay. National parks and museums would close, and routine food safety inspections would be suspended.

With uncertainties over federal budget cuts by the Department of Government Efficiency and the Trump administration, the government is set to shut down on Friday night if a resolution is not reached. The last government shutdown, under Trump in 2018 to 2019, was the longest ever at 35 days.

The situation remains tense as the Senate plans to vote on the budget proposal on Friday. Essential government services and programs like Social Security and Medicare are not expected to be affected by a potential shutdown. Democrats and Republicans are facing off in a race against time to avoid another government shutdown.
