Rep. Larry Kraft and Legislators Unveil Bipartisan Reforms to Minnesota’s DWI Policies

Legislators in Minnesota have announced bipartisan reforms to the state’s DWI policies following a deadly crash last year. Representative Larry Kraft and Senator Ron Latz unveiled a bill aimed at preventing repeat DWI offenders from driving while impaired. The proposal includes stronger laws, such as increasing the amount of time offenders are required to be on ignition interlock, doubling the lookback period for offenses, and removing obstacles for offenders to get on interlock. The goal is to prevent future incidents like the one that occurred at Park Tavern, where the driver had five previous DWI convictions and was four times over the legal limit. The bipartisan legislation has received support from workers, advocates, family members of victims, and local officials. The bill is set to receive hearings in the House and Senate committees in the coming week. Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan expressed gratitude for the efforts to prevent tragedies like last year’s crash from happening again.
