City council designates Boston as a ‘sanctuary city’ for transgender individuals

The Boston City Council voted 12-1 to make the city a sanctuary for transgender individuals. Councilors Julia Mejia and Liz Breadon proposed the measure in response to what they see as harmful rhetoric from the Trump administration. Mejia stated that Boston will not back down in protecting the rights of transgender individuals, who are feeling increasingly vulnerable in the current political climate. The resolution aims to ensure that taxpayer-funded agencies in Boston do not comply with federal efforts to strip resources from transgender and gender-diverse individuals. Mejia and Breadon emphasized that the resolution, while symbolic and non-binding, is an important first step in supporting the rights of transgender individuals. City Councilor Ed Flynn was the sole member to vote against the measure, citing a need for more information. The Massachusetts Family Institute pushed back on the councilors’ framing of the Trump administration’s actions, stating their support for efforts to protect children from what they perceive as the harms of gender ideology. Boston’s designation as a sanctuary city for transgender individuals follows similar actions in Worcester and Cambridge.
