Athletic Programs at the University of Minnesota

The University of Minnesota has announced the departure of men’s basketball coach Ben Johnson after four years of leading the program. Director of Athletics Mark Coyle thanked Johnson for his dedication but stated that the decision was made in the pursuit of competing for championships. Despite Johnson being a terrific person, the university believes a change in leadership is necessary to deliver the expected results.

Coyle emphasized that the university offers a desirable job in one of the best conferences and cities in the nation, with top-notch facilities and a historic venue for games. They are committed to competing at the highest level on and off the court and will begin a nationwide search for a new men’s basketball coach immediately.

The announcement of Johnson’s departure comes after the team’s return from the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament and highlights the university’s commitment to excellence in their athletic programs. The decision reflects the high expectations for success in both sports and academics at the University of Minnesota.
