37-year-old Woman Charged with Involvement in Death of Northern Minnesota Jail Inmate in 2018

The death of Hardel Sherrell, an inmate at Beltrami County Jail, has led to criminal charges against Michelle Skroch, the director of nursing at MEnD Correctional Care, LLC, who was responsible for providing healthcare at the facility. Sherrell’s health deteriorated over several days, with documented complaints of numbness, falls, and severe pain. Despite pleas for medical attention, Skroch allegedly failed to provide adequate care or assess his vital signs. Surveillance footage showed Sherrell’s condition worsening before he became unresponsive and was pronounced dead. Skroch has been charged with second-degree manslaughter and criminal neglect. Federal authorities have also ordered Beltrami County and MEnD Correctional Care to pay $2.6 million to Sherrell’s family for violating his civil rights. The case has raised concerns about the conditions and treatment of inmates under the care of private healthcare providers in correctional facilities. Attorney General Keith Ellison’s office is overseeing the case following a referral from Beltrami County Attorney David Hanson.
