A state grant, known as the Meat Education and Training (MEAT) grant, is being used by Minnesota schools to teach meat processing to students. The grant has provided $350,000 to nine districts to establish or enhance meat cutting and butchery training programs. West Central Schools in Grant County is one of the districts that received a $35,000 grant to support the purchase of a meat processing mobile trailer and provide hands-on training for an agriculture instructor.
Eric Sawatzke, the high school agriculture teacher and FFA advisor at West Central Schools, helped create the state grant and is involved in teaching meat processing in schools. He recently discussed the importance of this program on the Minnesota Now podcast. The grant aims to provide students with valuable skills while supporting the local agriculture industry.
