Skiers with Minnesota connections die in avalanche near Girdwood

Three heli-skiers were tragically killed in a massive avalanche near Girdwood, Alaska. The victims were identified as David Linder, Charles Eppard, and Jeremy Leif, aged 39, from Florida, Montana, and Minnesota respectively. The men were on a backcountry ski trip with friends when the avalanche occurred. Linder, a radio station co-owner from Miami, leaves behind a wife and three children. Eppard, described as a loving father and husband, is survived by his wife and daughter. Leif was a Minneapolis resident with ties to Minnesota.

Recovery efforts were hindered by dangerous conditions in the area, with a fourth skier in the group safely rescued. The avalanche, which buried the skiers between 40 and 100 feet deep, occurred in an area only reachable by air. Avalanche experts warned of very dangerous conditions at elevations above 1,000 feet, with the possibility of natural and human-triggered avalanches due to additional snowfall.

As efforts to recover the bodies continue, experts are advising against travel in avalanche terrain. The situation remains risky, with the potential for sudden avalanches at any time.
