Romanian authorities arrest 6 individuals over alleged coup plot involving Russia

Six people suspected of colluding with Russia to plot a coup against the Romanian government were detained by Romania’s anti-organized crime agency. The group, formed in 2023, aimed to undermine Romania’s sovereignty and defense capacity. They sought to remove the current constitutional order and install a new government with help from Russian embassy officers.

Raids on eight homes yielded evidence supporting these claims and led to the expulsion of two Russian military diplomats from the embassy in Bucharest. This decision was made due to alleged intelligence-gathering activities that supported the group’s anti-constitutional actions. The Russian embassy criticized the move, calling it unfounded.

These events come amidst tensions between Russia and Romania, with Russian interference claims in Romania’s canceled presidential election involving candidate Calin Georgescu. Georgescu, under investigation for alleged support of fascist groups, is challenging judicial control measures imposed on him.

The European Court of Human Rights rejected Georgescu’s complaint regarding the annulment of the election, stating that the decision was final. Additionally, authorities conducted searches linked to Georgescu’s associates, resulting in the discovery of weapons and cash. The rerun of the election is scheduled for May 4th, with the participation of Georgescu still uncertain.
