Pro-Palestinian protesters occupying Barnard College library cleared by police responding to bomb threat

Barnard College’s library was evacuated due to a fake bomb threat during a sit-in staged by pro-Palestinian protesters. The New York Police Department responded to the threat at the college’s Milstein Center, which was later cleared. About nine people were taken into custody following the demonstration. Videos showed protesters inside the building chanting and hanging Palestinian flags, while police later cleared and detained them. Barnard President condemned the protests for endangering staff and students by refusing to evacuate the building. Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine claimed the threat was fabricated by administrators to clear the protest. The student group launched the sit-in in response to recent expulsions of student protesters and other actions taken by school officials. Last week, pro-Palestinian protesters pushed their way into the college’s offices and assaulted a school employee. The group dispersed after the administration agreed to meet with them over their demands, including amnesty for disciplined students. Barnard College plans to resume its regular academic schedule following the incident.
