The World’s Oldest Llama Brings Comfort to Chronically Ill Children in North Carolina

Whitetop, a bucktoothed llama, has been crowned the world’s oldest llama in captivity at 27 years and more than 250 days. He lives at Victory Junction camp in North Carolina, founded by NASCAR royalty Kyle Petty, to comfort chronically ill children. The camp is free and caters to children with various conditions. Whitetop is known for his sweet and empathetic personality, providing comfort and sensory input to campers through petting. He has a close friend named Gus-Gus, a miniature highland cow, and enjoys rolling in wood chippings, eating soaked alfalfa, and posing for selfies.

With great veterinary care and regular exercise, Whitetop has lived well beyond the average llama lifespan of 15 years, showing only signs of arthritis in his old age. Campers, like Stephanie Wilkerson, have found solace in petting and hugging Whitetop, who has gained newfound fame for his longevity. Limited edition T-shirts featuring Whitetop are being sold to support the camp financially.

Despite the misconception that llamas often spit, Whitetop is described as not exhibiting this behavior due to his love for his job. Instead, he continues to bring comfort and joy to the children at Victory Junction camp, helping them come out of their shells and providing them with important sensory experiences.
