Minnesota lawmaker calls bill to protect women’s sports ‘genocide’

Minnesota state Rep. Alicia Kozlowski delivered a passionate speech denouncing House File 12, a bill that would prohibit trans-identified males from competing in women’s sports, in the Minnesota House of Representatives. Kozlowski compared the bill to an act of “genocide” aimed at erasing those who do not identify as male or female.

Kozlowski, who identifies as non-binary/Two Spirit and is a member of the Ojibwe Native American tribe, emphasized the personal impact of sports on their life and expressed disappointment in the government’s attempts to limit access to sports for trans and non-binary individuals. The bill was ultimately rejected by a narrow vote of 67-66, with all Democrats opposing it and all but one Republican in support.

The Preserving Girls’ Sports Act is part of a broader national trend, with 27 other states implementing similar measures to require athletes to compete based on their biological sex rather than gender identity. Supporters argue that biological differences between men and women give men an unfair advantage in sports, leading to calls for policies to ensure fairness in competition.

Efforts to prohibit trans-identified male athletes from competing in women’s sports have gained traction, especially after trans swimmer Lia Thomas broke women’s swimming records. The issue remains controversial, with arguments on both sides about fairness and inclusivity in sports.
