Expert suggests Trump’s withholding of Ukraine aid is comparable to U.S. changing alliances during WWII

Michael A. Horowitz, a geopolitical and security analyst, emphasized that a suspension of U.S. military aid to Ukraine would have a noticeable impact on the conflict, despite Ukraine not running out of bullets immediately. The United States has provided $65.9 billion in military aid to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in 2022, significantly more than any other country. This aid includes air defense missiles that protect both military positions and civilians, as well as artillery and training for Ukrainian forces.

Europe could potentially provide some support, but fully replacing American aid would be nearly impossible. Removing American aid could eventually lead to Ukraine rationing ammunition, resulting in higher casualties for Ukrainian forces. Additionally, Ukraine relies on U.S. supplies for essential defense systems like interceptor missiles and guided missiles for rocket systems. Without this support, Ukraine would struggle to protect its cities from Russian missile strikes and effectively combat Russian forces.

Furthermore, Ukraine already faces a manpower shortage, and the loss of U.S. aid would pose even greater challenges. Rob Lee, a senior fellow at a think tank, warned that the consequences of cutting off U.S. aid to Ukraine would become increasingly crippling over time. Ultimately, a lack of American support could have severe consequences for Ukraine’s ability to defend itself and would likely lead to higher casualties among Ukrainian forces.
