Election for Minnesota House Seat Scheduled for March 11th

Gov. Tim Walz has scheduled a special election in the Roseville and Shoreview area House seat for March 11, following the opening of the District 40B seat after Curtis Johnson, the DFLer who won it, was ruled to not live inside the district. The outcome of the election will determine whether the DFL pulls into a 67-67 tie with Republicans or if the Republicans will have a two-vote advantage, allowing them to pass most legislation on their own and bring the House back to full force.

The Supreme Court canceled the initial special election scheduled for last month, ruling that Walz did not provide enough notice for potential candidates. Those interested in running have until Feb. 11 to file, with a primary on Feb. 25 if necessary. Two candidates already in the running are Republican Paul Wikstrom and Democrat David Gottfried.

The House has been stalled over a power-sharing agreement, with closed-door discussions ongoing this week to get the House up and running. The House has been without enough members for over three weeks, as Democrats deny a quorum to conduct business. The Supreme Court is reviewing a Republican petition that could determine if the GOP can pressure Democrats into attendance with a motion. Gottfried expressed his excitement to move forward with the campaign after the election was rescheduled.
