Minnesota House to vote on legislation prohibiting transgender athletes from participating in girls’ sports

The Minnesota House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on a bill that would ban transgender athletes from competing on girls sports teams. The proposal passed in a party-line vote in the GOP-controlled House Education Policy Committee, with GOP lawmakers arguing that it is necessary to prevent trans athletes from gaining an unfair advantage in women’s sports. Despite the unlikelihood of the bill becoming law, federal officials are pressuring the state to comply with President Trump’s executive order banning transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison asserts that state law allows transgender athletes to compete consistent with their gender identity, superseding Trump’s order.

Opponents of the bill, including LGBTQ+ advocates and DFL lawmakers, argue that it would discriminate against trans women and girls and could lead to enforcement problems. Despite Republican support and a rally with activist Riley Gaines, DFL leaders have indicated that the bill is unlikely to pass in the House. The DFL-led Minnesota Senate is also unlikely to bring the bill up for a vote, with the potential for it to be included in later discussions on education spending and policy proposals.
