A Minnesota judge has reduced a man’s life sentence to time served after nearly three decades in prison. Jerome Nunn, who was sentenced to life in 1996 for his role in a murder, had been working on his rehabilitation during his time in prison. Nunn earned his GED, three associate degrees, a paralegal certificate, and became a minister. He also helped others with criminal records find jobs through a work release program. The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office petitioned to lower Nunn’s sentence after a law was passed in 2023 allowing for sentence adjustments based on rehabilitation. The victim’s mother supported reducing Nunn’s sentence, writing to the Board of Pardons in 2014 and multiple times since. Nunn was resentenced to time served and discharged from the court’s jurisdiction after serving 29 years and 219 days in prison. This case highlights the importance of rehabilitation and second chances in the criminal justice system.
