Business Partner Recalls Gene Hackman’s Playful Pranks

Gene Hackman, a beloved actor, was also known for his love of pranks. He played golf with friend and business partner Doug Lanham, where they made bets that Hackman didn’t always agree with. After owing Lanham $22, Hackman repaid him in pennies in a big tool chest, along with a humorous note signed by “Captain Hollywood.” Lanham and Hackman became friends after meeting at Lanham’s restaurant in Santa Fe, where the couple eventually invested and became business partners for almost 10 years.

Sadly, Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their home, along with one of their dogs. The cause of death is still under investigation, with initial tests showing no external trauma or carbon monoxide poisoning. Hackman was 95 at the time of his death, and his passing was described by Lanham as perplexing and heartbreaking. Despite their private nature, Lanham highlighted their generous support of local businesses financially, without seeking recognition.

Friends and acquaintances remembered Hackman as a down-to-earth, common man who showed interest in everyone he spoke with. His involvement in the community and willingness to work alongside others on projects showcased his humility and kindness. Ultimately, Hackman’s legacy in Santa Fe was one of adding texture and depth to the community. His personal contractor, Jesse Kesler, expressed gratitude for the years of friendship and trust with Hackman and Arakawa, noting how Hackman never acted as a legend but rather as one of the guys.
