The Luverne Cardinal boys hockey team is heading to the Minnesota State Hockey Tournament for the fourth time in program history after a thrilling double overtime victory in the Section 3A Championship. Despite falling behind 2-0, the Cardinals showed resilience and toughness by rallying to tie the game and ultimately scoring the winning goal. Senior forward Marcus Vortherms expressed pride in the team’s ability to defy the odds and take down a larger opponent. Head Coach Tony Sandbulte praised the team’s determination and called the victory “uplifting and really magical.”
The team held a special practice at Midco Arena in Sioux Falls before heading to St. Paul for the tournament, which begins on Wednesday at the XCel Energy Center. Luverne will learn their draw on Saturday. This victory marks the second time in three years that the Cardinals have made it to the state tournament, showing the determination and skill of the players and coaching staff.
