Former University of Minnesota Undergraduate Student Government (USG) President Shashank Murali resigned in March amidst allegations of sexual harassment brought against him. Two women filed reports with the University’s Equal Opportunity and Title IX Office (EOT) accusing Murali of inappropriate behavior, including encouraging one woman to drink excessively and touching her without consent at a party in February.
The women, whose identities remain confidential, also alleged multiple incidents of misconduct during the academic year. After the complaints were brought to USG leadership, two members took the matter to the human resources department on March 19. Murali attributed his resignation to mental health concerns in his resignation letter.
While University policy requires employees to report allegations of sexual misconduct to the Title IX office, student organizations like USG are not obligated to do so. However, USG stated that they follow all University policies regarding sexual misconduct and have internal policies in place to ensure a safe environment for all members.
The women have chosen not to pursue an investigation as Murali has already graduated. EOT allows members of the University community to report instances of alleged sexual misconduct through various channels. Title IX may prevent student groups from taking punitive action against a member without an investigative process confirming misconduct.
Murali declined to comment on the allegations when approached by the Minnesota Daily. Despite the controversy, USG is committed to providing resources and support to those who come forward with experiences of misconduct.
