World War I explosives safely removed from southern Minnesota historical center

Authorities in southern Minnesota were called to the History Center of Freeborn County to remove three live World War I-era grenades that had been sitting in the museum’s collection for over 50 years. The discovery was made when a sergeant from the Albert Lea Police Department responded to a call for help with a grenade, which was found to be a live German grenade from World War I. The museum was evacuated and closed for safety reasons, and the St. Paul bomb squad was called in to assist. Two more explosives, a German hand grenade and a German mortar round, were found in a box by a museum employee while waiting for the bomb squad. The explosives had been in the museum since the 1960s, and thankfully, the bomb squad was able to remove them without incident. This close call serves as a reminder of the importance of proper handling and disposal of historical artifacts, especially when they pose a danger to the public.
