Successful Demonstration of NextNav’s Positioning Reference Signal-Based PNT Technology – Inside GNSS

NextNav, a leader in Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) technology, has successfully completed lab and field demonstrations of its PNT solution based on Positioning Reference Signal (PRS) standards in 5G waveforms. This achievement validates that NextNav’s technology can provide a resilient terrestrial complement and backup to traditional GPS signals in a commercial 5G-based PNT solution.

Field tests in Palo Alto, California using a prototype network on NextNav’s existing spectrum demonstrated precise timing synchronization and robust positioning capabilities, laying the foundation for widespread commercial deployment. NextNav Co-Founder and CTO, Arun Raghupathy, emphasized the importance of building a terrestrial PNT solution on a global standard.

NextNav’s goal is to work with 5G infrastructure and device providers to scale resilient PNT solutions. The company’s vision aligns with its rulemaking petition before the FCC, proposing a reconfiguration of the Lower 900 MHz band to support a 5G-based terrestrial 3D PNT while also facilitating 5G broadband deployment. This effort addresses the critical need for greater resiliency in terrestrial PNT technologies and freeing up more spectrum for 5G broadband.

NextNav’s successful demonstrations mark a significant step towards achieving their vision of a comprehensive and robust terrestrial PNT solution using 5G technology and PRS standards. The company’s progress underscores the importance of innovation in addressing critical challenges in PNT technology and advancing the capabilities of 5G technology.
