Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has fired over 100 intelligence officers from 15 agencies for using a government chat platform to discuss topics like polyamory, gender transition surgery, and politics. The chat tool was overseen by the National Security Agency and the fired officers’ conduct was deemed a violation of trust and professionalism.
Conservative commentator Christopher Rufo first reported the existence of the chats and posted transcripts online. Gabbard issued a directive to identify and terminate the employees involved, with some discussion in the chats including criticism of Gabbard herself and celebrating the death of a Republican candidate in 2023.
Gabbard stated that these terminations are part of a larger effort to root out bad actors in spy agencies and restore public trust. Elon Musk supported this sentiment on social media, calling for a “MAJOR house cleaning.” The National Security Agency is investigating the inappropriate discussions and emphasized that misuse by a small group of individuals does not represent the entire intelligence community.
Additionally, Gabbard’s office and the CIA have sought to fire intelligence officers working on diversity programs, leading to a legal challenge. The officers have requested reassignment and questioned the legality of their planned dismissal, arguing that due process regulations have been violated. A federal judge is set to rule on this case on Thursday.
