From Novice to Nordic Champion: One Skier’s Journey from Beginner to Super Bowl in a Single Winter

Reid Forgrave, a reporter for The Minnesota Star Tribune, recently took on the challenge of learning to skate ski in preparation for the Prince Haakon 15-kilometer race. Despite growing up playing pond hockey in Pittsburgh, Forgrave quickly realized that skate skiing was a whole different ball game. He struggled with the technique, finding it much more challenging than he anticipated. With the help of a coach from the Loppet Foundation, he worked to undo his bad habits and improve his form.

For the next two months, Forgrave dedicated himself to training, skiing at every opportunity, including early mornings, lunch breaks, and late nights. He experienced the beauty of skiing at sunrise and under the light of a full moon, despite suffering from frostbite at one point. Despite the challenges and setbacks, Forgrave persevered, determined to improve his skills and prepare for the race.

His journey showcases the dedication required to learn a new sport and the rewards that come with pushing oneself outside of their comfort zone. Although he faced difficulties along the way, Forgrave’s commitment to his training paid off in the end. Skiing under the moonlight and experiencing the thrill of racing down the trails, Forgrave’s story is one of resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
